In addition to John's excellent explanation you should note that you don't need to remove the USB stick to add tracks, or to delete or modify the tracks that are on the USB stick. If you enable the Samba server (ie, file sharing) on the Touch then the USB stick will be available as a drive on your network. You can then manipulate the files on the USB stick -- including adding new files -- from any other computer on the network.
