Base the system on a modern digital AVR which will handle myriad sources and you can't go wrong. I use Denon but there are lots of competent ones these days as Toby notes. Listen to Mnyb and avoid any speakers with "micro" in the name unless you simply can't fit anything larger. :) My favorite really small speaker is the NHT SuperZero 2.0 but they do need a little sub of some kind as they're not big enough for decent bass. Start with a nice 2.1 system and add speakers as needed and budget allows.
