At least your Squeezebox is talking to the B&K Reference 31 now.

There's quite a big possibility that your DVD player tops out at 24/48
or 20/48 over the SPDIF connections.
More to the point, there's a possibility that the B&K can only handle up
to 24/48 on its inputs.
I remember there being a right old kerfuffle from the Hollywood film
studios when Pioneer permitted transfer of 24/96 data from their
machines.
Up until that point most other manufacturers only had 24/48 SPDIF output
from their machines, and it's probably still the case now.
The soundtracks on DVDs are generally 16/48 (excluding of course the
higher spec version of DTS which is up to 24/96, and Dolby Digital Plus
which is 20/48, and both formats are supported by HDMI only).

Have you tried converting some 24/96 files down to 24/48?
LMS will not downsample 24/96 because the Squeezebox Touch can handle
24/96 natively.
