I mainly use linux, so I can't recommend a tool for linux.

I loaded the file into audacity and it shows as mono, like itunes.

I'm investigating if there's an additional metadata "tag" that can be
added to the squeezeplay alac decoder to determine if a file is mono,
instead of only relying on the number of channels.
