I use linux mainly, so can't recommend a tools for osx.

The alac decoder implementation is from a very old version of ffmpeg and
doesn't handle the newer alac files very well.

My osx build of Triode's squeezelite player plays the mono file in both
channels on my 10.6.8 mac mini.

You could replace squeezeplay with it and my jivelite build for osx. 
Both can be found using the Squeezebox client builds link in my
signature.  There are README files with installation details.  There's
no installer like squeezeplay but the setup is still quite simple.
