Processor activity on squeezebox has a strong effect on sound quality (specialy for digital ouputs). Change kernel priority for optical or usb output, you will see what i mean. On the fly decoding (for a flac straem) or TCP data reception (if PCM) are not the same for processor. If will change the sound. Buffer management too has effects on sound. It decides the way the processor injects data in the real time output stream for digital outputs. I had some inguz files in the /darwin directory. I Removed them an will see (inguz has old codecs).
