Some USB sticks are horribly SLOW and that will definately cause problems with high def files - 16bit 44.1k really should work OK though.
I've got a back up of my music on a USB hard drive which I occasionally use connected directly to the Touch, this includes some 24bit 192k stuff and these play back perfectly well on the Touch (via external DAC).
