When I first got my Touch, I tried two different USB powered harddrives,
sometimes they'd work ok, but sometimes they seemed to be working (LED
flashing) but with a very faint clicking sound, this is lack of power
from the Touch's USB port for sure. Otherwise as you say, they'd work
fine connected to a PC.

I gave up trying to use the Touch as a server, bad experience - *not
worth the effort*.
