Just adding my 2 cents to the OP's question (and confirming all the other advice). Yes, one must be running LMS somewhere to use the Touch. It is not a player that one simply directly connects to a computer. It is a "network streamer". LMS manages the local music files, or internet radio streams, or services such as Pandora, Spotify, Tidal, etc. LMS then STREAMS the content to players on the same network (like the Touch). LMS can run on a Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. that's on the same network as the Touch. Others are recommending running LMS on an raspberry Pi instead of the Mac. I agree. I run LMS on an rPi4B running piCorePlayer. This setup includes LMS. And I then use a TOUCH (or other squeezebox players) for the actual network attached players.
