I have been trying quite hard to avoid forking the package index, but  
I have been unable to get a response from the catalog-sig about any of  
my patches. PyPI/distutils makes a number of assumptions  about  
packaging that don't really apply to Trac plugins, the biggest example  
being that uploading a new version will hide all prior version. When  
dealing with multiple maintenance branches, this is generally  
unhelpful. Also the XML-RPC search API is woefully inadequate.
