Sometimes that's a sign of a serial comm problem - could be a bad cable, flaky connection, bad USB adapter, or even a soldering problem on one of the charge pump capacitors near the ST202.
First thing to try is disabling turbo mode. That'll knock it down to 4800 baud, which is usually enough to get around marginal cabling.
