No, I don't have all the answers, but I did know that the Kenwood can not do messaging with a Nuvi via the GTRANS cable... this I knew by reading the information provided. >From the Argent Data Systems store: *** Output is NMEA at 4800 baud with GPRMC, GPGGA, and GPGLL sentences. There are only so many hours in a day. Try writing a manual that tells you everything that an object can't do... that's a fairly endless task. Scott has been pretty good on saying that with an OT2, and a Nuvi, you can do messaging. Not once has he said that with a Nuvi, a GTRANS cable, and a Kenwood TM-D710a can you do messaging. The GTRANS cable only translates position information from the Nuvi to a NMEA string and vice versa. > every situation is different., and most of the information is sparse > and scattered all over the place. I just wished I would have had > more information. Well, every time you try to connect a Nuvi to a Kenwood TM-D710 with a GTRANS cable, you'll get the same result. You could have had more information by asking. > It's hard to ask questions, if one does not know what the > questions are. but on the other hand, no big deal, But you knew the question, because you knew what you wanted to do. You wanted to be able to do messaging with the Nuvi on the Kenwood... Question 3 from your email sent at 3:59 this afternoon was exactly that. > 3. If I should by some miracle, get it working, will I be able > to send and receive messages with the Nuvi? Thanks Shortly afterwards, Scott replied: > No, you won't be able to do messaging through the nuvi on the Kenwood. That seemed to work pretty good... 2 hours for a reply, probably a lot faster than the shipping delay waiting for the parts to arrive. All I am saying is that it costs very little to ask questions. You have direct access to the manufacturer here in these forums, as well as many individuals with years of experience. If you're not sure about a product, or how it will interface with another item, it is very easy to ask, and you will get a reply in very short order. Ordering parts, and then after the fact asking why they don't do what you thought they should is a little like crying over spilt milk. There's not much you can do about it. A fool and his money are soon parted. A little time and a quick email can remove the fool from the above statement. Invest a little more time learning. There are a lot of things to try and figure out if you are jumping into the deep end of the APRS pool... asking questions is like putting on some waterwings... you might think you'll look silly, but we won't be fishing you off the bottom of the pool with a stick! Spend some time with the Kenwood, it too has it's strengths and weaknesses. There's a forum for that too! James VE6SRV
