when we merge some of your work in master.

I think that would be the best way to go. Just work of a branch from
1.8devel 
and rebase to keep current. People could follow your work (I will) and 
help test it. When it is mature enough we can merge it into master for 1.8

Just start coding away (and have fun), based on the stuff in the wiki 
page. Perhaps you could consolidate the discussion on the wiki to have
a clear direction. Just ask for help on this list or directly.
