I echo Dianne's statement re: where and why it's generated and that it must 
be on the 835 so,  if truncated in the payers system it will no longer be a 
meaningful number to the provider (on 835).  Other guides also say to include 
this number if sent on original claim ( we state that in the 277..."required 
when available from original claim" is the segment note at the REF - 2220D 
page 187 and also at dependent level of this transaction).

Truncating anything (in order to accommodate claims processing) that has to 
be returned to the provider in another transaction must be done with a lot of 
thought.  I would suggest to you that if you need to truncate this number, 
you should consider storing the original number somewhere so that it can be 
retrieved and sent back (in its entirety) to the provider.

As for DSMO, we will not be considering any more changes to 4010.  Any DSMO 
changes submitted and approved will be to later versions.
