First of all you can still send an 835 electronically and transmit an EFT
transaction to the bank for payment to the provider. I am not sure you
would want to sent the 835 to the bank as it holds much PHI.
Thank you,

No, you can relax.
The 835 is called remittance advice. You can continue to pay by check and
reference the check number in the 835 in the TRN segment.
>From what I hear, it will take a while (years) until financial institutions
can process the 835, make an electroninc funds transfer and then pass the
835 on to the provider.
For the time being, I believe that smaller payers will continue to write
checks.

This is so obvious someone has probably asked it already but...We are a
health plan that has always paid providers by check. We do not do any form
of electronic payment to providers. Does transaction 835 require us to
begin paying electronically if a provider requests it or can we continue
paying solely by paper? If we decide to continue with paper checks, are we
out of compliance with HIPAA if a provider requests an electronic payment
via the 835 and we refuse?
