"Not properly loaded" was the correct "wild guess" ;)

I used Mercurial's "make install-home" target to isolate this 
installation from Debian's Mercurial package (which I removed anyway, 
but I like to have things cleanly separated ;).

With this installation type the hg command didn't find its modules in 
$HOME/lib/python. Using the PYTHONPATH environment variable solved the 
problem.

I successfully cloned the transcode-hist repository to my home 
workstation. So everything should be fine now.
