This is the kind of thing that works OK in the lab, but may not work well in 
the field.  I too have sometimes put RJ-11 plugs into RJ-45 jacks for testing 
purposes, but I have noted that the RJ-11 plug does not get good lateral 
support in an RJ-45 jack, since the side wall of the jack do not contribute 
to holding the plug in place.  Sometimes I have to jiggle the RJ-11 plug to 
get proper contact.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that in some countries, the specific 
connector type is called out in the regulatory requirements.  This 
consideration may or may not apply in your case, depending on your equipment 
type, where you plan to sell it, and where in your system you propose to use 
the mis-matched plug and jack.  I suggest you look into this aspect carefully 
before you proceed.
