their school. They told the kid they were going to schedule his driving test
for the next day. He panicked. He insisted he wasn't ready and refused to go
test.
They trained him a couple more days and again told him it was time for him to
test.
"No, no, I not ready. I stink. Need more time."
They kept reassuring him that he was as good as everybody else they send for
testing, but the kid would hear none of it. He'd say, "No, if I fail test, I
get punished, you get punished. No, no good." Finally, one instructor asked
him, "What do you think is going to happen if you fail?" The kid told him of
how his father learned to drive a truck.
As the kid grew up, his father had a gnarled hand, barely usable. His father
was a truck driver in the North Korean army. When he was being trained how to
drive and shift a big truck, the military trainer would sit next to him, and
every time he missed a shift or grinded the gears, the trainer would take a
small club and club his shifting hand with it. That's how his hand got so
gnarled.
The trainer explained to the kid that he was in the USA now, and things don't
work like that here. No one would be punished in any way for failing a driving
test, and in fact, if he failed it, the examiner would tell him what he was
doing wrong and send him back to the school for more practice.
Another country that needs to calm down.
