I have had a somewhat similar experience. Here is a message I posted over
the weekend:

I received a new 680 unlocked GSM phone last week. It worked fine for about
24 hours. Then it started randomly rebooting spontaneously. When it wasn't
doing that it wouldn't always connect to the T-Mobile system. When it wasn't
doing that it would drop calls or reboot mid-call.

Palm Corporate Customer Support said all of these problems were caused by
the SIM. They said the phone requires a 3G SIM. T-Mobile doesn't operate a
3G system. They gave me the most up-to-date SIM they have and for the
following 3 days the phone has behaved as it should.

Palm Corporate Customer Support even told me I should return the phone for
credit if I don't get a 3G SIM. Yet I can't find one notation that this as a
requirement for successful operation of the 680 in any of Palm's sales or
support info. on their website or the website of the Palm Store.
