The phone's ringer is via the rear speaker. The phone's earpiece is the front speaker. Neither speaker will make noise if a wired headset is plugged in the jack.
The failure people are talking about is when the jack hardware stops detecting when the plug is removed, so the phone ALWAYS thinks it has a headset plugged in. This causes the phone to make no sound through either internal speaker. It cannot be fixed by the user (short of major surgery on the Treo's guts) and replacing the unit is necessary.
