The custom ROM helped a lot. Made the 680 much snappier and more stable, 
though there still is some aggravation when certain operation sequences 
cause it to lock up. (I mean lock - as in have to pop the battery to 
reset it.)
This light-up is more of a peskiness, as in it doesn't unlock the device 
-- as in I still have to unlock the keyguard if I want to do anything -- 
but it's something it shouldn't do.
