I fly 100,000mi/year and I've had the same pair of nail clippers with me, on every flight, for the last five years. (hhmm... might be time to replace them now that I think about it. :-)) Some of the rules are assinine, but this one happens to be an urban legend. Pointed scisors of any kind were banned for a little while but they relaxed that years ago so that those with blades less than 4" are allowed. There are plenty of valid reasons to knock the government without having to resort to things that aren't true.
