I have had a Treo and used catagories extensively. I have migrated to an
iphone (I know, I know) and was very disappointed in its native note app. I am
not sure if the Pre has a comparable application but an app called Notemaster
does what was suggested in another email. In it catagories are created and
then can be synced to Google docs and then exported to your local computer if
you want. Check in you app store for Notemaster or for other note apps. I
thought I wouldn't like the cloud and the inability to have a backup on my own
computer but syncing to google is easy and many of the things synced to and
from your phone can be exported through google to your desktop.

Another thought:

Export the 1092 memos, break them into their categories, and save each
category as a discrete document. Then, save that document (e.g., a
text file) on your Pre. It'll be readable (but not editable) in Doc
View.

Alternately, save them each as a cell in an Excel spreadsheet and view
them in Doc View.

Alternately, alternately (probably the best option, actually), save
each category of memos as a single text file, then import each of the
6 text files into Google Docs (online). That will be viewable AND
editable on your Pre by going to Google Docs via the browser (which
works really well). If you need a copy on your Pre that doesn't rely
on Internet access, export it the latest version from Google Docs as a
text file (or Word file or Excel file) and then view in Doc View.

It's not ideal, but far from insurmountable.
