Actually the latest version of preware is supposed to take care of the multiple
patch install. I haven't actually tried it yet though.

The general rule is to remove all patches before downloading a system
update.
There is a tool provided by the WebOS Internals guys called
(appropriately) "Emergency Patch Removal tool" - it will get rid of all
patches on the device.
It's a bit of a pain to have to reapply them after the update, but I
hear they're working on a way to help with that too...
