Not anymore, there is now "WebOS Internals Releases AUPT (Auto Update Patch Technology)" See: http://www.precentral.net/webos-internals-releases-aupt-auto-update-patch-technology If your patches confirm to AUPT then you do not have to remove them at the next OS upgrade. There is a tool provided by the WebOS Internals guys called (appropriately) "Emergency Patch Removal tool" - it will get rid of all patches on the device.
