My dislike of all things Microsoft is mostly philosophical, with some
real-world instances that, to me, prove the point. I tried Outlook
several times over the years and was always disappointed when I compared
to first Eudora, then Thunderbird and Palm Desktop. I never could get
used to Outlook, especially it's manner of handling (in some cases not
handling) contacts, no delayed-send for email, etc.
Finally, I've got a google domain and, though I've not yet got
'round to building a web site, I'm loving the calendar and contacts
capabilities. (OK, I'd like to see a couple things in calendar, but ...)
I especially like Google's ability to search a complete contact
database to find all listings of, say, Dietrck - including where he's
mentioned in notes. I often create a contact for a company, and put
individuals and their extensions in the note.
I love the reliability of the sync. I had some trouble for a bit
getting it to sync with my Treo Pro AND with Lightning, and I never
really had ActiveSync doing what I needed done with the reliability I
demanded. Then I got used to the idea that when I'm at my desk I've got
Internet/Google and when I'm away I've got my Palm. Make an edit on one
and it's almost instantaneously on the other. Reliably. Calendar the
same way.
And for what Google won't do (for my purposes) there are Dropbox
and Evernote.
Finally, I can tinker with the Pre because I want to, not because
I have to. I'm even getting past my objections to the keyboard - OK, not
past, but I can use it. =)
Outlook is great for people who like it. I'm just not one of them.
