John,
I've made dozens, nay, hundreds, of Contacts changes to both Google
contacts (via my PC's browser) and via the Pre and all changes have
always synced both directions pretty quickly thereafter (I can't
recall waiting more than 15 minutes or so for any changes to sync).

Perhaps you should delete your Google account in Contacts on the Pre,
let it flush everything out, restart the phone, and then add the
Google contacts account back to the Pre.  At this point, that's all I
can think to recommend.
