Or bite the bullet and get a hosted Exchange account. All these fiddly little problems with Gmail are so familiar - I've been fighting similar things (still am) for my clients with Google Apps and regular Gmail and how it interacts with Windows and with Outlook. Google has a long, long way to go before they catch up with Exchange either technically, functionally or from a customer service point of view.
When I enter a change in Outlook, or in Outlook Web Access, or on the Pre, I expect to wait a few *seconds* for the change to propagate. I'm rarely disappointed. It's as good as BES on the Blackberry, without the extra costs associated with BES (anywhere from $15 to $30/month, depending on carrier and Exchange provider). For someone who depends on this all working, day in and day out, hour by hour, I can't imagine doing anything other than Exchange. The $8 (OK, $9 since Activesync costs an extra $1/month) is not that much. If needed, cut out two trips to Starbucks per month and it's covered! My $0.02US! Perhaps you should delete your Google account in Contacts on the Pre, let it flush everything out, restart the phone, and then add the Google contacts account back to the Pre. At this point, that's all I can think to recommend. - Craig . . . snip . . . [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
