You know what occurred to me: the possibility that one or more of your contacts is malformed in some way that’s choking the sync. I don’t have a remedy for that, but at several points in the past I’ve encountered sync problems when item messes up everything. I wonder if exporting your Google contacts and then reimporting them would fix your problem. It might be worth a try! Email all works, calendar updates almost immediately in both directions, the ONLY problem I have is contacts won't sync. If 1.4 doesn't fix it, I'll have to look at Exchange. Actually, I started looking last night; put it on hold to see what 1.4'll do. Thing is, I don't mind playing with my device some. It's fun. But I don't enjoy the device playing with me.
