The person who left the suggestion said he'd found it on another forum. Numbers and slashes are problems. & is OK. Funny thing is, some that sync'd to the Pre still have numbers in the name field. I just hadn't got to them yet to remove the numbers. So it's difficult to know exactly what combination or position causes the problem, and there's still a disparity somewhere because there are two on the Gmail that aren't on the Pre.
