You don't have to uninstall anything when you update the OS now. However, homebrew apps (as well as patches) are only seen via either Preware on the Pre itself or WebOS Quick Install (PC App), so it's obvious what's homebrew and what's not. Look, it's unfortunate that some of this functionality isn't in the Pre, but some of it is actually just code that IS in WebOS, it was just commented out for some reason. Yes, occasionally people have problems and have to do a total wipe, however, since almost all your data is stored in the cloud, you're not going to lose much, and your chance of having to wipe is probably on the small side. I've been using patches for at least 6 months and have never needed to. But I think it is an attitude. Some people are willing to put up with a little more risk for tinkering around and actually getting lots of benefits, whereas others would rather play it safe and put up with limitations. Something everyone has to way based on their own personality, technical savvy, etc.
