Come to think of it, John, I'm wondering if this habit got started back in college, or even high-school (I was typing stuff up on a computer back when I was 15 in '83), where there were length requirements. Back then teachers hadn't quite caught on (or so I thought) that they should specify the number of words for a paper rather than the number of pages, since I could easily play with margins, spacing, etc. But I guess you can do the same thing with handwriting!
