Because you're older than about 40 and that was the rule when you
learned to type. Younger folks whose only experience is computers
generally only use one space -- although my 11-year-old granddaughter
was using two spaces the other day. Turns out her teacher is in the
over-40 crowd.
I learned to use two spaces more than 40 years ago on an IBM
Selectric. Then I went in the Navy and dropped one of the spaces when I
started on a TT-264 (let's see who knows that one!). From there, it was
all downhill.
