I just went through this with mine. You need the bits from 3com that
have the MSDOS program that sets the ioport and irq. You have to tell
the program to take the NIC out of PnP mode and put them in ISA mode.
In your Trinux /etc/modules file add the line:
3c509 io=0x250,0x260
Those numbers can be what ever you choose.
I know of 2 ways to choose the ioports and IRQs. The first is to boot
a linux kernel and cat the files /proc/ioports & /proc/interrupts.
Find unused numbers and use them.
The second way is what I had to do since I have to run Win95 on mine
since the Cable company requires it to be available for their service
staff. Boot win95 and open the properties window on Network
Neighborhood, select properties on the adapter card, select the
resources tab in the properties and chose the auto-detected
configuration. Windows will tell you what it chose that was not in
conflict with any of its other drivers.
I then booted MSDOS, ran the 3com config prog and hardwired the ports
& IRQs.
I think the 3com config prog is available on their web site. If not,
let me know.
Thanks,
Costa

I had the same problem with the generic 3com 3c509x (ISA) cards. The
documentation says support is built into the kernel for those cards, and it was,
but the problem was I think I had to set the IRQ's and IO's manually. I read
documentation with how to do that if you added your own module to the disk, but
no documentation for how to set the IRQ and IO for the modules already as part
of the kernel. Anybody have an answer on this?
