If you don't agree with that model, you could contact the writers to make some suggestions for their future work. What would make you contribute financially to such a project? My interpretation is they can't afford to release that for free without additional financial support, but there's every indication they would otherwise, judging by the context and past work by Raphaël Hertzog.
