Why is it bad that the authors want to be able to support themselves for their work? In any case, since they've made it 94% of the way, clearly there are many who don't share your opinion.

They could just release it under a non-free license and be done with it. They'll probably rake in a decent amount of cash for it. They've decided to go a step further and see if they can still support themselves and make it free anyway.
