I don't know how common it is, but there are players you can get that work like that.
Well, both the players I've had do this. One was the one ThinkPenguin sells,
and one was an Insignia one ("Insignia" was a Best Buy brand which has since
been discontinued). The only thing about both of these is that the
manufacturers expect you to use a Windows program to convert videos for use
on them.
