I think it is normal that ~/.gvfs remains empty. When I plug a USB key, it is  
automounted but ~/.gvfs remains empty.

Use the default locale to run the command so that you can then search the Web  
with the error message in English:
$ LC_ALL=C gvfs-mount -d /dev/sdb1
