Often times, avoiding proprietary software comes to a point of avoiding  
computers altogether for that task.

Are you talking about avoiding proprietary software on your own computers or  
on computers you do not administrate?  The latter case does not make you  
more/less free.  Only the owner of the computer is harmed by the proprietary  
programs she runs.  It is sad for her but not your business (well, if you  
care about that person, you can explain how proprietary software harms her).   
Even RMS accepts to use Windows on computers he does not administrate, as  
long as that does not involve using proprietary protocols that would force  
the interlocutor to use proprietary software (typically Skype).
