For this purpose I use Clonezilla. During my upgrade experience, I first  
backup my computers working state with a saved my disk and when I screwed  
things up, I just did a restore disk. Highly recommended.

Here is a screen by screen tutorial of the process that someone made. Beware  
the info is from 2011, but it seems at a glance to be more or less unchanged  
from what I did:
