Most Atheros chipset require firmware.  ath9k_htc is free software but it  
does not support every Atheros chipset.  Acoording to the description of the  
related package, it supports the AR9271 and the AR7010 chipsets.  As far as I  
remember AR9170 and AR9270 work as well (they do not require firmware?).   
ath10k chipsets do not work with Linux-libre and other 100% free kernels,  
such as Trisquel's.
