since running a non-free hardware WILL risk your privacy and security since  
you cannot audit the source code.

That is true.  However, more generally, you can only control the Wifi  
firmware (know what it actually does, modify it, e.g., correct bugs, share  
your improvements with the community, etc.) if it is free.
