Blainer) Again, I am sorry to interrupt, but the example given by DaveH is right on. This is one example--an excellent example--of what the BoM is saying regards missing information. The concept of Baptism is much debated among Christians, not only whether or not children need to be baptized, but whether baptism needs to be by immersion or whatever, why the Lord suffered himself to be baptized, etc.. These are important points, and the BoM covers them very nicely. As the BoM points out, contention caused by disagreements over these points gives Satan power over those who do not have the plainness of the more sure word of God. Here are some clarifying points from the BoM about Baptism:
Nephi explains why the Lamb of God was baptized: (2 Nephi 31:7) "Know ye not that he was holy? But notwithstanding he being holy, he showeth unto the children of men that, according to the flesh he humbleth himself before the Father, and witnesseth unto the Father that he would be obedient unto him in keeping His commandments." The mode of baptism is given: (3 Nephi 11:23, 26) " . . . on this wise shall ye baptize them--Behold, ye shall go down and stand in the water, . . . and then shall ye immerse them in the water, and come forth again out of the water." The source of disputations and contention regarding baptism is given: (3 Nephi 11:28-29) "And according as I have commanded you thus shall ye baptize. And there shall be no disputations among you, as there have hitherto been; . . . FOR VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, HE THAT HATH THE SPIRIT OF CONTENTION IS NOT OF ME, BUT IS OF THE DEVIL, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one against another; but this is my doctrine, that such things shall be done away." So, there you have it--the main reason Satan has power over those who do not have these clarifications, and the main reason God in his mercy gave us the BoM.
