I'm not sure what he meant by the spiritually alive statement, but as a biologist, I fully relate to the "physical state" comment. Biologically, genes from our ancestors are transmitted through sperm and egg. These genes determine our physical and behavioral makeup. So we inherit our "physical state" from our ancestors. I don't know of any mechanism for inheriting a spiritual state, and quite frankly, I don't believe one exists. I think our spirits are formed when we are born, and therefore, they are new and unique, without any inheritance from our ancestors. Why does our physical state have death attached to it? Well, the Bible tells us it is because of Adam's sin. From a scientific perspective, we just know that the body begins breaking down and eventually dies. We don't really know why (from a scientific perspective). Peace be with you.
