DAVEH: I don't see it that way at all........Paul
pretty well explained it in 1Cor 8:5-6......
Maybe you need to read the scripture Again, try the whole
cahpter, not just the words in parenthesis.
"As concerning therefore the eating of those
things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we
know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none
other God but one. For though there be that are called gods,
whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom
are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are
all things, and we by him..” 1 Corinthians 8:4-6
THIS VERSE IS CLEARLY MONOTHEISTIC
"there is none other God but ONE
... But to us there is but ONE God"
DAVEH: And then he specifically adds Jesus Christ to his comment as a
separate entity. Why would he do that if he weren't pointing out their
differences despite their singleness of purpose?
From my LDS perspective, Kevin, I find it interesting that many
Christians don't recognize and acknowledge the individual existence of
more than one God. From the earliest time (the creation of the world),
the plurality of the Godhead is apparent. This continues into the NT
times where Jesus plainly defers his glory to his Father in Heaven.
Even after his death, the plural nature of God, Jesus and the HS are
obvious in their oneness (of purpose). The three are individual
entities, yet work as one as a Godhead in their purpose to bring to
pass the immortality and eternal life of man. I find it curious why
this is not obvious to those who view the context of the whole Bible,
Kevin. By holding to this only one God belief instead of a worship
one God understanding, it creates a paradox that needed to be
addressed by a misleading theory like the T-Doctrine. Instead of
clearing up the matter, to me it is clearly a politically motivated
explanation intended to obfuscate the truth about the nature of God.
IDOLS are FALSE "gods"
1 Co 8 "we know that an idol is nothing in the world,
and that there is none other God but one."
1Co 10:19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is
offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
FALSE gods contrasted against the TRUE God
"For though there be that are called gods,...But to
us there is but one God"
There are some that are "CALLED" a god but are not God.
Idols are called "gods" because they are false gods
PS 96:5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made
the heavens.
There is a world of difference between being CALLED a god and actually
BEING God!
God commands the worship of ALL "gods"
PS 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast
themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
Addressing this verse JOe said: “You know and I testify that Paul
had no allusion to the heathen gods. I have it from
God, and get over it if you can. I have a witness of the Holy
Ghost, and a testimony that Paul had no allusion to the heathen gods in
the text.” Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith by Joseph Fielding
Smith, page 371
You must have a burning to get this one.
Obviously Joe ignores the CONTEXT and ends up with a PRETEXT
DAVEH: Not at all, Kevin. JS looked at the context of the entire
Bible. You want to narrow the discussion to specific passages that
were quoted of JS, but you don't seem to want to address the message of
the Bible......which is: God set the tone in Gen 1:26 when he referred
to US. Throughout the remainder of Scripture, several Gods are
thus described that pertain to that US (Godhead), yet the
Bible points to just one to whom we should worship.
Verse 4 tells us the context "Concerning things
offered to idols"
His focus is on the words in the parenthesis, while he can not find
"called gods" in the same verse! No allusion there.
Joe makes his stand on a parenthetical thought while ignoring all the
verses and context around it. This is about as foolhardy as making a
doctrine out of a question. Such as else what shall they do that are
baptized for the dead??????
He misses the word IDOL in verses 1,4,7,10 NO ALLUSION Here!
Why not focus instead on "there is none other God but ONE" or "But to
us there is but ONE God" NO ALLUSION HERE!
Also notice The True God is capital "G", FALSE so "Called" gods are
lower case "g"
Joe can not find all these other words and verses for the same reason a
robber can never find a police man.
Plus as he tells you his revelation from his god takes
precedence over God's word in his eyes.
"doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as
prominent in the Bible as any other doctrine. It is all over the face
of the Bible. ... Paul says there are Gods many and Lords many. I want
to set it forth in a plain and simple manner; but to us there is but
one God—that is pertaining to us;" TPJS p 372
LDS try to claim they are not POLYTHEISTIC (guilty
conscience?)
DAVEH: Not at all, Kevin. We worship one God....our Heavenly Father.
Primitive and pagan peoples often believe in and worship many
supposed gods.
They imagine that there are gods of birth, marriage, and death,
of war and peace, of the mountains, forests, and plains, and so forth.
It is falsely supposed by uninspired religious scholars that Yahweh or
Jehovah was the tribal God of the Hebrew peoples, that he gradually
came to have pre-eminence over the gods of other nations, and that he
was finally accepted as the One Supreme Being. The fact is, however,
that monotheism did not grow out of polytheism, rather polytheistic
concepts are apostate perversions of the original truth about God which
was revealed to Adam and the ancient patriarchs. It should be
remembered that polytheism has reference to pagan deities to whom
reverence, devotion, and worship are given. It is not to be confused
with the gospel truth that there are "gods many, and lords many, But to
us there is but one God, the Father, and one Lord Jesus Christ." (1
Cor. 8:4-7.) The saints are not polytheists. Mormon Doctrine, p. 579
“all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD
made the heavens.” Ps 96:5
Gods Word or the word of a False Prophet you decide!
Ez 14:3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in
their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their
face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
