Hi Slade,

I am not supposed to be posting right now but I wanted to clarify this as it was originally from a post of mine.  The context was a reference to John’s post that Clinton could not have been a Christian due to his repeated adultery.  My context was salvation.  In this context one sin versus another (except perhaps the unpardonable sin) does not keep one from being saved.  In other words, just as hypocrisy does not keep one from being saved, neither does adultery.  That God would look upon some sin as worse than others in a different context makes complete logical and biblical sense to me.  To commit adultery or to think about it are different, although both are sin.  Both have the same outcome (fall short of God’s glory) but one is worse.  That being said I am always surprised when I read the lists the Bible gives of certain sins in some texts when things like slander and gluttony are placed right beside sins like murder.  I believe that our own stratified list of sins may not match how God feels.  Each culture has a sin value list.  My wife is half-Maltese.  In Malta, having a mistress and committing adultery is not near the top of their list of sins; it is accepted.  In our western culture adultery is much higher on the list (although still not near as high as homosexuality).  Bah, I begin to digress.

Izzy,  I told Lance of your post today regarding the Faust book.  His email is down but he will reply when it is back up.

JONATHAN HUGHES SAYS: "John, a man who commits adultery (even 60 times which of course in Clinton’s case is hogwash) can still be a Christian.  It is no worse a sin than your own hypocrisy."

I hear that sin is sin and no sin is greater than another. Jonathan seems to be using this concept here in this post. Can anyone give me Scriptural evidence for this belief?

Greetings Slade.  As I am sure you know, one unforgiven sin will send the sinner to Hell for all eternity, be it idolatry or stealing a paper clip.  That confuses some people into thinking that all sins are equal.  The Biblical truth is that some sins are greater than others. (Matt.23:14, Mark 12:38-40, Luke 20:46-47, James 3:1.  Just as there is greater faith, greater rewards, and greater works, there are degrees of sin, from unintentional sins on one end of the scale, to abominations on the other.  There is no scriptural evidence for any other opinion that I am able to discern.
