DAVEH:  After thinking about it for a few minutes, I've decided to take a moment and respond to your your reply, Slade.

Why is the symbolism greater than the physical?

DAVEH:  That's an interesting question, Slade.  My first instinct is to say that the physical is a short term benefit, whereas the symbolic has long term rewards.  When you think of some of the physical things (viz., healings)  the Lord did for those who believed on him while on this earth, wasn't it the symbolic healing that transcended the grave that had a much more important effect?

To follow this logic, then the Statue of Liberty (the “symbol” of liberty) is far more important than the liberty itself. Surely you don’t think this is true!!?

DAVEH:  Not necessarily.  Had the Statue of Liberty been a target of the terrorists' attacks of 9/11, I suspect there would have been a lot of Americans willing to give their lives (which includes their liberty) in defense of what that statue symbolizes.  Is that not commonly seen by some in war time, when they give their lives for the flag?  Maybe I'm wrong on this.....just thinking out loud.

I was referring to physical cleanliness, but the symbolism is also a big factor. Izzy

DAVEH:  I had thought it was a bigger factor than physical cleanliness.  But, I suppose staying clean might have been a lot harder then than now!
