This is why knowing the historical context of Scripture is so important. You would know that while the Jewish culture was highly literate (in Hebrew, Greek, and often in Aramaic), they were highly oral, placing far more trust in the oral tradition than in the literary tradition.   Memorization is there, both in Torah and the Prophets... i.e., Thy word have I placed in my heart and These words shall be on your heart...
