Good points, Caroline.  But, to play devil’s advocate, the whole point of the article was to protect yourself from the State’s “protection” of you/yours.  As for #1, that can be accomplished with a legal trust.  For #2, some elder folks here avoid marriage and live together because tax-wise it is a better break (not that I approve of that necessarily). This also protects their estate for their inheritors.  And #3, teens are going to do whatever they do regardless of this discussion. J And when adults “fall in love” they think the same way the teens do.  Izzy

Pros for legal marriage

1) legal protection and rights including survivor benefits, inheritance, insurance etc.

2) tax breaks

3) teens can't contract serial marriages/divorces behind their parents backs. Some are probably doing it anyway but they know such marriages are not accepted.

When teens fall in love they:

- honestly and wholeheartedly believe it'll last forever

- honestly and wholeheartedly believe it's God's will

- will believe that stats that say teen love and teen marriage is temporary does not apply to them

If the above three are not issues, then sure, no reason to get marriage sanctioned by State. But then again, we have to remember that everyone going to the altar never thinks they'll need State protection from the person they are swearing to love forever and ever.

Love,

Caroline

Stay Single Young Man! http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=43732.

Not bad advice from my experience,  I’m becoming a believer in avoiding letting the gov’t be involved at all in one’s marriage. Being married by God vs married by the State; do you really need both to be legitimate? What do you think? Izzy
