Personal effort is always and only out of response to God's saving activity.   It is "required" in the same way breathing is required to continue physical life.  All references of joint participation are to be viewed in this context.   That is the gospel message as I understand it.   To argue that my effort is actually required to secure my salvation is repulsive to me  --------   not to mention scary. 
 
How shall we escape if we NEGLECT so great a salvation?  Escape what? God's wrath? (Heb 2:3)
 
Should we just kick back and wait for God to honor the incarnation? or should
we "run with patience the race that is set before us?" (Heb 12:1)
 
Either way it will take some effort ....
